Car wash fundraiser at The Mariner

At Japara The Mariner (formerly South West Rocks), we have some younger residents that prefer doing more physical activities outdoors, with one resident frequently asking to wash cars. It wasn’t long before Sonya Thacker, Lifestyle Coordinator at The Mariner, decided to let residents wash the company car.

Around the same time, some of our staff at The Mariner had been discussing redoing the Basil floor balcony to make it feel more welcoming to residents and their loved ones. This particular balcony is a popular spot for lunch or relaxing when the weather is nice.

It was a no-brainer – let’s start a car wash to fundraise for the balcony! We are charging only $10 for a regular sized car or $15 for a 4WD. Our staff have been on board from the beginning and were more than happy to have their cars cleaned by our residents. So far, we have made a whopping $200!

Now, we take residents down to the cars to sit and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Some help with the washing, others are happy to sit and laugh at the craziness. We drink cold lemonade and listen to the Beatles on the speakers. We get wet and the cars get cleaned, it’s the perfect way to spend a sunny day!

Four elderly people and a lady sitting outside and potting plants

With what we have raised so far, we have purchased some plants and pots for the tables on the balcony and plan to buy some garden statues. One of our volunteers has also suggested making a piece of artwork to hang on the balcony using seashells, fishing net and driftwood – so residents will be making this in craft in the coming weeks!

“If you’re not too far away from our aged care home in South West Rocks, be sure to give us a call to come by and get your car cleaned by our lovely residents!”
