Celebrating culture at Albury & District

One of the many lifestyle options and activities on offer at Japara Albury & District, are regular cultural days. These are an opportunity to learn about, celebrate, and experience some of the diverse cultures that make up the local Albury community.

The lifestyle team have been working to involve community members and groups in these days, to expand the experiences for residents and add to their authenticity.

Last week, Albury & District enlisted the support of  Minakshi, Sunil and Dhruv of M&S Caterers to celebrate Indian Cultural Day at the home.

Minakshi spoke to residents about life in India, Indian culture and food, and answered resident’s questions. She and Dhruv  performed cultural dances and residents enjoyed a feast of butter chicken, rice, paratha and mango lassi. Minakshi, Sunil and Dhruv then spent time sitting and talking with the residents and family members who had joined the festivities.

Some of the Albury & District staff kindly lent the lifestyle team some cultural dress which was put on display, along with colourful posters showing India’s regions, festivals and food.

Lifestyle Assistant Sharon McMahon said that, while not all residents and family members liked the food, they appreciated the opportunity to experience new things and learn more about Indian culture.
