Creating a home-like environment for dementia support at South West Rocks

A refurbishment project to provide even greater support to those living with dementia at Japara South West Rocks will begin this month.

The exciting project will see an existing area of the home being reconfigured into a ‘small house’ model to cater for 15 residents living with dementia.

Japara Development Manager James Wheelock said that the space had been carefully designed to be as home-like as possible.

“The hub will be self-sufficient with its own dining room, lounge room and secure outdoor areas, together with dementia specific spaces like a sensory room and break-out sitting areas,” James said. “It will also have a kitchenette where residents can make tea or help staff with making snacks or basic cooking. It’s been designed to be as close to a regular home as possible to create a stress-free and familiar environment.”

The small home-like model is similar to The Hub at Japara Noosa, which Dementia Strategist Ben Gatehouse said had helped achieve really positive outcomes for residents.

“The home-like environment supports a better quality of life,” Ben said. “We’ve seen how this approach can help reduce complex behaviours for residents living with dementia and support their autonomy and independence.”

The model is reflective of Japara’s ‘living life as usual’ philosophy.

“Our aim is to provide seamless continuity of lifestyle from when a person lived at home, to when they come to residential care,” Ben said. “We want there to be as little disruption as possible, so that it’s an easy transition into residential care, but also to support quality of life for that resident.”
