Meet Kristine Gerdtz: Home Manager at Japara Kelaston
We caught up with Kristine Gerdtz, Home Manager at Kelaston aged care home in Wendouree, to find out more about her journey into aged care and what she loves most about working at Kelaston.
Kris, tell us a bit about yourself.
My name’s Kris Gerdtz and I’m the Home Manager at Japara Kelaston in Wendouree. I met and married my best friend/soul mate, a local Wimmera boy in 1978, we have been married for 43 years in December. Chris and I have 2 children, Sam & Shandelle, both married with children, 5 grandchildren ranging from 21 years to 5 years, and have another due in July.
When did your career in aged care begin?
I have worked in aged care for 44 years. My journey began after spending most of my childhood on my grandparents’ farm in Leonards Hill where many memorable times were had.
At 17, I decided that I wanted to work in aged care and commenced my State Enrolled Nurse training at the Queen Elizabeth Home in Ballarat.
I have always worked in aged care, I commenced at Kelaston in October 1995, when it was known as Association for the Blind, and since then have worked in various roles in the industry. I’ve been in my current role as Home Manager for the past 11 years. I’ve seen many changes during this time, including two new builds.
What do you love most about working at Japara Kelaston?
I’m very passionate about Kelaston, our residents and my amazing team here, they are like my extended family. My own family often joke, “if Mum’s not at home she will be at Kelaston!”.
I’m so proud to be part of the Japara experience, living our values every day. It is a privilege and a pleasure to care for the elderly, I believe that every resident who has spent time at Kelaston has experienced the warmth and excellent care and services that the team at Kelaston deliver to them.
If you weren’t working in aged care, what career path would you have chosen?
If I had my time over, I would honestly follow the same journey in aged care with Japara.
