Meet the Manager: Liz De Abreu, The Regent

Following in her parents’ footsteps, Liz De Abreu has always been drawn to a career caring for others.

The Home Manager of The Regent, Japara’s new aged care home in Mount Waverley holds a wealth of healthcare expertise, with 20 years’ nursing and managerial experience across both aged care and acute nursing environments.

We ask Liz about her exciting new role and what makes her so passionate about the aged care industry:

What drew you to a career in the aged care industry?

Both my parents worked in aged care when I was growing up. Seeing the work they did and the difference they made to people’s lives had a huge influence on me and I’ve almost always known that I wanted to be a nurse.

My first role in the industry was working in the kitchen and laundry department of an aged care home when I was 16. Then, once I’d finished high school I began training as a nurse.

Once qualified, I spent my first few years as a Registered Nurse in aged care, but then changed paths to an acute environment to gain experience in a different field.

When did you join the Japara team?

I enjoyed my years in acute nursing, but my heart has always been in aged care. I’ve been the Home Manager at Japara Hallam for 11 years, championing the Japara values and creating a safe and home-like environment for our residents.

What do you love about working at Japara?

I’ve seen Japara develop and grow as a company, yet the intimate, family-like culture has always remained as the heart of the organisation. The transition into residential care can be unsettling and daunting for both residents and their families. Therefore, it’s essential that residents are involved in the decision-making process when it comes to their wellbeing and lifestyle. At Japara, we go above and beyond to ensure that our residents can continue to live life as usual and feel at home in their new surroundings.

What are you most looking forward to about your new role at The Regent?

Having spent over a decade in an established Japara home, I’m looking forward to the challenge of shaping the culture within the home, leading a strong and united care team, and creating a vital and reliable aged care resource within the Mount Waverley community.
