Our very own Mr and Mrs Atley

Lawrence and Margaret Atley have been residents at Japara Rye Sands since June 2020, having booked in for a week’s respite in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the week was up, they made the decision to stay permanently and so with the help of Japara and their family, they were packed up and moved in within an hour.

A bit about the Atley’s…

  • The happy couple were married on 23rd February 1963 and are just about to celebrate 58 years of marriage. They have 4 children, three girls and a boy – Andrea, Lisa, John and Celia – and their hobbies include fishing, card playing, writing poetry and watching Cricket and AFL (they are both staunch Bulldog supporters).

  • Lawrence is an Architect and ran his own practice in Footscray for 30 years. He has designed many of the large buildings in and around Footscray such as The Society for the Aged (an aged care facility in West Footscray), many of the buildings at Victoria University (including a nursing education section), a YMCA, an extension to the Footscray Town Hall and the local Forges store. He has also designed several schools around Melbourne including the senior college at St. Patrick’s College, Ballarat.

  • In 1972, Lawrence was invited to join the Rotary Club of Footscray and has been a member for nearly 50 years. He has served both as President and District Governor of District 9800 and represented the World President 3 times. Both Lawrence and Margaret are now Honorary Members and Paul Harris Fellows. In 2015, Lawrence was awarded a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to the community, particularly through Rotary.

Japara Rye Sands

Despite their history with Footscray and the Western suburbs, Lawrence and Margaret were keen for a change. After retiring, they moved to the Peninsula where they have been for around 11 years – they love the relaxed style of living and the friendliness of the people down there. Moving into our Rye Sands home was something that they simply could not resist after they stayed with us for just one week last year!

At Japara Rye Sands, we have many features and services available to all of our residents, including:

  • Hair and treatment salon
  • Patio and garden areas
  • Bus trips
  • Professional chef
  • Leisure and lifestyle programs providing entertainment, socialisation and therapeutic activities both on and off site.

Recently, Lawrence and Margaret spent a day enjoying the One Spa at RACV Club Cape Schank, which they described as a ‘wonderful experience’. They both enjoyed relaxing together and loved the luxurious treatments that awaken, revive and promote balance within the body.
