Toni and John celebrate 72 years together
The 18th of January 2019 marked 72 years of married life for Toni and John Van der Pluym. The couple married in a little Dutch village in 1947. Toni and John first met through ice skating and dancing and their friendship quickly blossomed – “it was love at first sight,” says Toni.
In 1954 they immigrated to Australia in search of a better life, and lived in Cranbourne and Dandenong. With three children, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, the five-generation couple say they still adore each other.
Throughout his life John has been an accomplished organist, clarinet, and saxophone player and Toni loves tenpin bowling, push-biking and cricket. Toni, at age 95, and John at 97, attribute their long and happy life to Toni doing the talking and John listening.
We’re lucky to have Toni and John as part of our Japara Scottvale community in Dandenong (VIC). The couple celebrated Valentine’s Day at the home with family, cake, and John even serenaded Toni with a harmonica performance. Watch it here: John’s Harmonica performance
Congratulations Toni and John on a lifetime together – we love your story and wish you both the very best!
